She came out of the closet, a place we all know so well, in 2005 Tokyo gay parade. This month (June), she and her partner Maki Kimura exchanged vows and had a public wedding. More than 1,000 people gathered for the event. Gay marriages are illegal in Japan and like-so in many other Asian countries as well. Still, there is a vibrant gay life in a section of Tokyo called Shinjuku and other major cities. Japanese understand the fact that homosexuality exist in their society but they tend to avoid the subject matter. In recent years, there were a few Japanese entertainers, mainly comedians, that came out the closet. Most of them are men. The more public exposure, the better.
